Control external monitor brightness with Mac keyboard keys.

Apple’s brightness keys do not natively control every third-party monitor. Supported external displays can accept brightness commands over DDC/CI, but the full connection path has to pass those commands through.

Check your monitor before adding software

1. Open the monitor’s on-screen menu and enable DDC/CI if that option is available.
2. Connect the monitor directly when possible, then test your cable or dock separately.
3. Confirm the monitor can change brightness from its own controls.

Use F1 and F2 for the display under your pointer

DisplaySpan can route brightness-down and brightness-up media keys to the supported display containing your pointer. Move the pointer to the screen you want, then press F1 or F2. Shift-Option provides finer adjustments.

Keyboard brightness control requires Accessibility access. DisplaySpan handles brightness media-key events and ignores other keyboard input.

DDC/CI compatibility limits

Third-party DDC brightness currently requires Apple Silicon. Your monitor, connection, cable and dock must all pass DDC commands. Some adapters and DisplayLink paths may block them, so use the 3-day trial with your real setup before buying.

Apple display brightness uses system display services. DisplaySpan does not promise brightness support for every external display or Intel Mac.
